Open Events about Volunteering
Thursday February 4, 2010 7:30pm
Saturday February 6th, 2010 10:00 am
Samaritans Centre
Bott Lane
Walsall, WS1 2JQ
We are looking to further increase our numbers by holding two Information Events for people interested in getting involved with our emotional support work. The events will take place at the Samaritans Centre in Bott Lane, Walsall, at 7.30 pm on Thursday 4th February and 10 am Saturday 6th February. For more information phone or text 07852 770202, or email
Last year, Walsall Samaritans answered over 16,000 calls – our call volume has increased over the last two years. Since the start of 2008, our volunteer numbers have risen from around 40 to more than 60, but the branch needs to keep recruiting members to help maintain its hours on the regional phone–line rota.
Samaritans is intent on boosting its membership in Walsall to ensure that phone lines are always available when needed and that we are ready to support anyone who is in distress or at risk of suicide.
2008 and 2009 saw an increase in enquiries from people wanting to be part of what we do. We’re really pleased to have recruited so many people last year, and we want to keep the momentum going.
Listening Volunteers must be over 18, but don't need formal qualifications or previous experience, though a natural ability to listen and remain open-minded is essential. They are needed during the day and especially at night. To join Samaritans as a Listening Volunteer, people need to be able to commit to a weekly duty of around 3 hours a week. Late night, the small hours and evenings are the times when the service is at its busiest. Willingness to work some "unsocial hours" is important.
People often have a natural instinct to want to help someone in difficulty. With our training they can develop the confidence and precious know-how to turn that instinct into positive, sometimes life-changing support.
As well as the people who offer support by phone, email, or face to face, there are volunteers behind the scenes, helping the branch to run smoothly and playing a key role in keeping this vital service open. Currently help is particularly needed with publicity and fundraising.

Tuesday 16th February - How do you feel we can improve policing in the West Midlands ?
Invitation from the Chair of the West Midlands Police Authority to be heard.

The West Midlands Police Authority is ‘Your Voice’ and we want to listen to you. I am writing with information on a new initiative that the West Midlands Police Authority is launching this year. The Listening Campaign aims to encourage everyone within local communities to let their views be heard on how we can help serve their needs. As Chair of the West Midlands Police Authority I am keen to listen to as many people as possible and would like to personally invite you and members of your organisation to participate and let us know your opinion. We already undertake ongoing consultations, but this campaign aims to get to the grass roots of each community and to encourage people we usually do not have the opportunity to meet with to let us know how they think policing can improve. A meeting is being held on Tuesday 16th February, 7 – 9pm, at Walsall College on Littleton Street. The evening will allow us to briefly introduce the role of the West Midlands Police Authority, which we appreciate can be confusing and then attendees will have the opportunity to have their views heard. We would welcome your attendance and appreciate any support you can provide to bring others with you and to encourage as many of your local contacts to come along too. Please find attached a pdf leaflet explaining what the Police Authority does with a freepost form to register attendance and feedback comments. We have also set up a microsite that can be accessed at If you would like any more leaflets or have any questions, please contact me by email or on 0121 456 3004. I hope you will support the Listening Campaign and attend on the evening – you are welcome to bring along other individuals who are keen to participate. We would appreciate if you could please confirm your attendance via the registration page
