Warning....Have you checked your CAR NUMBER PLATES ?
New rules introduced on October 1st 2007, require that number plates fitted to cars registered after 1st September 2001 must show the embossed name and postcode of the number plate supplier and the BS AU145d British Standard symbol....but...keep reading...
If these number plate markings are not present, your car will NOT pass an MOT inspection and will result in an automatic MOT failure. This regulation has been drawn up to help MOT examiners idenify non-road-legal ‘show plates’, and other types of number plates which do not have the required British Standard symbol...sounds like your ok...but....
The BAD news is:
I have found that there are cars which were registered after 1st september 2001 (which were required to be fitted with the new standard number plates by the car dealerships) yet still have incorrect plates, which will cause your otherwise sound car, to FAIL the MOT examination....ahhh...not so good eh ?
The Dealerships are not always keen to recognise the oversight and you may wrongly be advised to pay for new number plates which should have been supplied by the dealership ! Please check your number plates and contact your car dealer if you fall into this category prior to your next MOT test so that you may avoid both the cost of new plates and a MOT failure.
The GOOD news is:
Vehicles registered before 1st September 2001 don’t need the Number plate identification codes. Naturally, number plates will still fail if the examiner finds the registration number uses letters and numbers with an incorrect size, font or spacing, ie custom show plates etc. Number plates which show an international marking to the left – such as GB or the Welsh Dragon – are fine, but those with football team flags or crests and cartoon characters will fail.
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) produced these regulations to help reduce vehicle crime and assist MOT testers to quickly identify a problem number plate. Police will also welcome this for accurate eyewitness accounts and to ensure various enforcement cameras work.
