Rosie's Walk ( 15 & 16 July 2006)
Written contribution by Karen Ross.
Rosie's Helping Hands - Reg. Charity No 1097278

The charity is based in Aldridge where we have lived for many years it came about by tragic circumstances when we lost our 16 year old daughter Rosie Ross, who was fatally stabbed in a random and motiveless attack whilst relaxing in Centenary Square Birmingham on a Saturday afternoon in 2001.

The charity raises money to benefit local children and young people as well as providing equipment and training for Walsall Manor Hospital and Birmingham?s City Hospital Accident and Emergency departments. The University of Birmingham, Cancer Studies department also benefits from donations for equipment.

Our largest fundraiser is Rosie's Walk which began as a sponsored walk in remembrance of Rosie. It has grown over the years to become a popular afternoon of entertainment and activities for all ages. Apart from being a fundraiser we also view it as our way of saying ?Thank You? to the community of Aldridge for their continuous kindness and support which has helped us enormously in our ability to cope with our loss.

Many, many local people of all ages have benefited from donations the charity has given out to various groups, individuals, hospitals and Cancer Studies. We keep in touch with some and it is wonderful to see how small amounts of money can make a vast difference to a group or someone's life and well being.

Forthcoming Events:

Rosie's Fundraising Weekend Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July 2006, Kicks off with...

The Worlds Largest Bike arriving in Aldridge. The bike with 24 sponsored riders is then heading off to Walsall on a round trip. Teams are being organised made up of Rosie's school year group and anyone who knew Rosie. If you would like to be in one of the teams please contact Karen Ross.

The bike comes with a 3.8 metre double sided banner and we are seeking local businesses to help sponsor this fundraiser and have their company logo printed on the banner. If you are interested please contact Karen Ross on 01922 456398.

Sunday 16th July is Rosies Walk and Festival, Country & Western style at Aldridge Airfield from 12 Noon to 5pm. A popular event including a beautiful 4 mile walk through some of Walsalls hidden countryside followed by an afternoon of live music, dancing and activities for all the family. Special guest TV Robot Wars double world champions Razer team will be in the Robo Challenge arena with builder and driver Ian Lewis. Leaving the Village by Sue Satterthwaite

For those of you who don't have a copy of "Leaving the Village", Yes it is about Aldridge.....read this, then go out and treat yourself with a copy, knowing you will have made a generous contribution to Rosie's Helping Hands...

The book contains the fascinating and deeply moving stories of the 101 men whose names appear on the Aldridge War Memorial. It includes details of the family who lost a son in each of the two World Wars, a tribute to the bravery of the village's youngest casualty aged just 16, and an account of the compassion of an Aldridge man who was killed as he dressed the wounds of a German Soldier.

Sue Satterthwaite (the author of 'Leaving the Village') also describes what life in Aldridge was like before each of the World Wars. Read about the first aircraft seen over the village in 1913, the closure of the last pit, the parrot that annoyed a milkman and floodlit dancing at Cedar Court.

Sue gives a detailed history of the War Memorial, considers why the names of five of the seven men who are buried in the Commonwealth War Grave in Aldridge Cemetery are not inscribed on it, and ends with memories of life in Aldridge during the Second World War.

Illustrated with copies of more than 100 photographs, maps and other records Sue's third book is a welcome addition to our knowledge of Aldridge and its history.

All the profits from the book will be donated to Rosie's Helping Hands.

Here is a list of local stockists, and if they sell out, please let me know by email to Alan at Aldridge web, contact details at the end of the Newsletter.

M.E.Brown. (Aldridge) Saddle and Harness Maker
    Tel: 07804 249687

Maker of pony saddles at very reasonable prices.
General Purpose and Showing Saddles 15 -15½ -16 from only £350.00
Saddles are made in the traditional way using a wooden saddle tree.
Simple design with an emphasis on the child feeling secure in the saddle.
As a child doesn't have the length in the legs, to create a feeling of control; I cut the panel narrower on the knee roll, which uses less flocking, this creates less bulk for a little rider to get their legs round the pony.
